With reference to your Circular despatch of

the 28th January, I have the honour to inform you that the

approximate number of motor cars and lorries in use at

present in this Colony is as follows:-

Public cars and buses

Private cars

Trucks or lorries

Of these, 29 only are of British make and the remainder are

foreign (mainly American).

I forward herewith a copy of a minute by the

Director of Public Works on the subject of the future scope

of such vehicles and the present road mileage of the Colony,

etc., as requested in paragraph 7 of your despatch under

reference.

Enquiries have been made locally from the

British members of the Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce

as to the reason for the success of British heavy lorries

and motor cycles, and the failure of British touring cars

and light lorries, in competition with American makes, and

I enclose a copy of the correspondence. There is no doubt

that British lorries (excluding small motor trucks) are

quite
